Basic word order: Verb in second place
In German main clauses the conjugated verb usually comes in second position. The rest of the sentence can move around it.
In a simple sentence the pattern is often Subject–Verb–Object: Ich trinke Kaffee. But the key rule is: the conjugated verb is in second place. You can move another element to the start for emphasis, and the subject then comes after the verb: Heute trinke ich Kaffee.

Memory tip: Think in slots: [slot 1] – verb – [slot 3]. Something must be in front of the verb, but the verb itself stays in second place.
